The First AI Passover: Moses’ email to Pharaoh
In 2023, we have arrived in a new age of expression, knowledge dissemination, conversation, and moral questions about technology.
While artificial intelligence has been in development for decades, this technology has achieved a level of sophistication that impresses both casual and expert observers.
Passover is a holiday of storytelling, asking questions, discussion about life’s most important values, and expressing a special commitment to freedom. The rise of AI, even with its present-day limitations, has great promise to expand the observance of Passover in new directions.
Questions … and responses … are the heart of Passover.
So I asked ChatGPT a question. (ChatGPT is the leading platform today for asking questions of an AI engine that is mastering human knowledge, expression, and conversation. )
My prompt:
Write an email from Moses to Pharaoh asking him to “Let My People Go”.
ChatGPT’s response, in about 1 minute:
Subject: Let My People Go
Dear Pharaoh,
I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I am writing to you on behalf of my people, the Israelites, who have been living in slavery in your land for far too long. We have suffered greatly under your rule, and we can no longer endure the harsh conditions of our servitude.
As you know, the God of Israel has sent me to demand that you release our people from bondage and allow us to worship Him freely in our own land. He has shown His power through the plagues that have befallen Egypt, and it is clear that He will not rest until His people are set free.
I implore you, Pharaoh, to heed the words of the Lord and grant us our freedom. We do not seek to harm your people or your land; we simply wish to be released from our chains and allowed to live as free men and women. The God of Israel has promised to bless those who obey His commands, and I am certain that your compliance with His will shall bring great blessings upon you and your kingdom.
Please, Pharaoh, do not let pride or fear keep you from doing what is right. Release my people from their bondage and let them go. In doing so, you will not only fulfill the will of God but also earn the respect and admiration of all those who witness your mercy and compassion.
I await your response, and I pray that it will be one of understanding and goodwill.
Sincerely,
Moses
My observations:
- Accurate retelling of the Passover story and characterizations.
- Stylistically strong, and even powerful.
- Even captured the spelling practice of observant Jews to capitalize pronouns when referring to God.
- Super fast. (It would’ve taken me 2 hours to write something similar.)
And then, I tried MidJourney, an AI program that generates images based on natural language descriptions.
My prompt:
Moses as shepherd, 25 years old, writing email, desert sun, egypt
Midjourney’s response is at the top of this post.
I’m blown away.
More to come about the First AI Passover…
Wishing you a happy, healthy Passover in freedom and prosperity.
